Packing Up My Best Friend’s Mom

What Packing Up My Best Friend’s Mom is about

After her divorce, his best friend's mother is leaving the family home, and he volunteers to help carry boxes. She has a better use for the final days there. Before the movers come, she wants new memories in every room, and she has chosen exactly who will share them, with a quiet house, empty shelves and nobody to interrupt.

Episode 1 recap

Rory's mother has just been through a divorce, and Rory, flying home on Friday, asks his best friend to help her move out. The helper turns up with a van and finds that she has changed a lot since he last saw her.

Over the phone Rory says to look after his mom, since she has had a rough year. She opens up while sorting boxes, tossing things from a marriage in which, she says, her husband never once looked at her. Then she asks him to close his eyes, and a quiet moment follows.

A real estate agent brings a viewing in ten minutes, and the host cheerfully calls the helper good with his hands. Later, in Rory's old room, the phone rings again. Rory asks how his mother is holding up, and the helper tells him she is in safe hands, with the double meaning left hanging.

Last days in the old house

Boxes, bare walls and echoing rooms make an unusual backdrop for flirting. The house is full of history, and she wants to rewrite some of it. The tone is warm and confident rather than sad, with a woman reclaiming her own space.

Fans of the mature-woman theme will find it in our stepmom and MILF collection, even though this is a best friend's mom, not a stepmom.
