Candy Lane is a street where the husbands are gone for eight hours a day. One rule applies: when a flag goes up, the neighbors need help with something. A plumber works through the street, all the women being fictional adults.

His first stop is Harriet, his brother's wife. The kitchen pipe is leaking again, even though he tightened that fitting himself. She says his brother is not great with his hands and that he told her to expect a visit.

Under the sink, a spray of water makes a mess, and the banter turns playful. She jokes that he has soaked her, and he tells her it is her fault for holding the flashlight. When the sink is fixed, she tells him that now he can come and see to her.
